Decatur, Georgia: One Of The Best Places To Live, Say Realtors

Popular American war (1812) hero Stephen Decatur is the namesake for at least 11 cities across the United States, including Decatur, Georgia. Part of the growing Atlanta metroplex, Decatur would have been a sprawling city like Atlanta, had forefathers not turned down the opportunity to be a depot for a national railroad in the 1830s. The railroad chose a spot seven miles away, and that township sprawled into the city known as Atlanta. Decatur retains its sense of place and small-town virtues while taking full advantage of its proximity to the amenities offered by Atlanta. Realtors point to a great place to live. "Named in several national newspapers as one of the best places to live," says Realtor Kathi Sanders, "the city of Decatur and its surrounding neighborhoods, offer a mix of historic properties, new homes and condominiums, and quaint shops and restaurants. This community has its own government, schools, services." Decatur, says Sanders, is "a very balanced market for both buyers and sellers. There are more homes for sale now, but house prices continue to rise moderately. A good selection and low interest rates make this a very favorable time to buy a home." Realtor Gray Carswel says, "The city of Decatur is an extremely attractive community for homebuyers. It is a rare combination of small town meets big city. With its unbeatable location (just a few miles from the heart of Downtown Atlanta) Decatur offers residents all the conveniences of an in-town neighborhood, but it also retains its small town charm and sense of community. There are concerts on the courthouse square, parades and special events throughout the year. Of course, many families are drawn by Decatur"s wonderful neighborhood elementary schools, which allow children to attend school within a few blocks of their home. Decatur also has exceptional city services, including some great parks. " Carswel recommends The Candler Pointe development for buyers. "Candler Pointe is an intimate subdivision of eight new homes priced from $399,900 and located in the city of Decatur," explains Carswel. "These homes combine historic architectural styling with floorplans and amenities to suit today"s lifestyle. They are under construction now and are scheduled for completion by December 1, 2002. The Candler Pointe development is located on a private cul-de-sac off Candler Drive. This new subdivision has a sense of privacy and seclusion even though it"s just about one mile from bustling downtown Decatur." "There"s plenty of nearby shopping as well. Downtown Decatur has a thriving business district. Nearby Oakhurst Village is experiencing a renaissance similar to that of Virginia-Highland during the 1980s. Slightly further afield, you have easy access to Avondale Estates, Candler Park, Little Five Points, Emory Village, Virginia-Highland, and Midtown," explains Carswel. "This area is served by MARTA. The #15 bus travels down Candler Street and ends at the Decatur rail station. Another excellent neighborhood amenity is The PATH, a multi-use urban trail that is enormously popular with local cyclists, runners, walkers, and bladers. Candler Pointe is near all of the groovy, in-town shops and restaurants." Click here to view current Market Conditions in your location.
